The year 2021 was unprecedented in many ways. Unfortunately, it was still impacted by the epidemic that changed our way of working and international cooperation. Despite the limitations, in LPVO, we will remember it for positive achievements and new experiences.
Take the advantage of the upcoming holidays to renew stocks of positive energy and efficient rest in the circle of loved ones.
In the coming year 2022, we wish you good health, effective overcoming of new challenges and sustainable personal and business development.

Kick-off of the Aurora project
December 1 2021
On December 1, we launched the AURORA (Achieving a new European Energy Awareness) project, funded by the recognized EU Horizon 2020 programme. The Aurora project is an innovation action that will bring photovoltaics closer to the citizens. We will install solar power plants with a total capacity of 1 megawatt at five locations in the EU, in Denmark, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom. Solar power plants will be crowd-funded by citizens, thus reducing their carbon footprint. With the developed app, the participants will follow their carbon footprint and, with the help of the project, reduce it as much as possible in order to become "near zero-emission citizens".
The first project meeting will be held on December 14 by the coordinator, the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Defense of the PhD Thesis

PhD student in scope of the Solar-Train project, Stefan Mitterhofer defended his PhD thesis entitled Modelling and monitoring of moisture transport phenomena in polymeric materials and photovoltaic modules on 20th of October. The defense was held online at 3:00 PM. Committee members were Prof. Dr. Gregor Dolinar (chair), Prof. Dr. Marko Topič, Prof. Dr. Janko Drnovšek, Dr. Tom Betts (University of Loughborough) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marko Jankovec (advisor).
Paper chosen to Spotlight on Optics
October 5 2021
A paper by Dr. Milan Kovačič entitled Analysis and optimization of light outcoupling in OLEDs with external hierarchical textures published in journal Optics Express was chosen for inclusion in Spotlight on Optics. Articles featured in the Spotlight are chosen by the editors based on excellent scientific quality and appeal to the broader optics and photonics community.

Defense of the PhD Thesis

PhD student in scope of the Solar-Train project, Julián Andrés Ascencio Vásquez defended his PhD thesis entitled Modelling and worldwide assessment of performance and aging of photovoltaic modules and systems on 21st of September. The defense was held online at 2:00 PM. Committee members were Prof. Dr. Roman Kamnik (chair), Prof. Dr. Janez Krč, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marko Jankovec, Prof. Dr. Ralph Gottschalg (Fraunhofer CSP) and Prof. Dr. Marko Topič (advisor).
Double award at EU PVSEC

Miha Kikelj has won two awards for the contribution to the European Photovoltaic Conference EU-PVSEC 2021 entitled“Do Not Blame the Butter for What the Bread Did” or How the Optical Properties of IBC Solar Cells Affect the Results of Spatially Resolved Characterization:
- EU PVSEC 2021 Student Award
- EU PVSEC 2021 Poster Award
In addition to the important discovery of the influence of optics on the results of spatially resolved electrical simulations, an excellent video presentation undoubtedly contributed to the award. We invite you to take a look at it.

Prof. dr. Marko Topič was Elected SAZU Associate Member

Prof. Dr. Marko Topič was elected a member of The Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Art. The election took place on June 3 2021 and he was elected an associate member in Section III of Mathematical, Physical, Chemical and Technical Sciences.
